Late Thursday

Ok, I am a little late today posting because I had too much information coming in about Helena and iI didnt have very much time today.  I apologies for having a long one. So I better get started. Matt Murphy, Helena resident and 100 WAPI radio talk show host had a chance to race at the Talladega Superspeedway. I think he said that he hit 170 mph.

Christine Boatwright wrote an article about a benefit concert for Glenn Allen's family. Glenn Allen died last week in a car accident in Helena. The benefit concert at Shelby’s in Pelham will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight, April 26. Shelby’s is located at 9340 Helena Road. Admission into the concert is $5. You can also go to the Helena Region's Bank and ask to donate to the Glenn Allen Memorial fund.

Helena Drag Strip
I saw this on Bobby Joe Seales facebook page. I think the Helena Drag Strip used to be off of Roy Drive in Helena and had famous drivers of the day in Helena.

To Cuba, from Helena
I saw this article in the San Francisco Chronicle news paper. International Expeditions, a travel company in Helena, Ala, is offering travel to Cuba...yes that Cuba Link. Here's a snibbet from the article:
"For over half a century legal travel to Cuba has been almost impossible for Americans, making this island a forbidden fruit for the adventurous. International Expeditions, the world leader in engaging and authentic nature travel, has been licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to provide authorized people-to-people Cuba travel for U.S. citizens beginning with two inaugural programs departing June 7, 14 and 21, 2012. Not only does this license allow participants to travel to Cuba legally, but it provides the opportunity to experience Cuba in the most authentic way possible - through the eyes of its people".

Iyaz will visit Helena
Doug Moore told me that the artist IYAZ will be coming to Helena on May 4th before the HAA concert coming up.  He will arrive there on the 4th at 9:45am to meet the students and to support  the fundraiser for the athletics program. Also 95.7 JAMZ will be there with some giveaways. (UPDATE: Due to travel delays, his appearance will be later in the day)

Unusual House Selling Incident
I had a reader in Helena share an unusual incident she had while seller here house. They wanted to share with others:

"My husband and I are selling our home in Helena for sale by owner. We had posted it on craigslist, among other websites. This past Friday, we received a call from buyers anxious to buy a home as soon as possible. They had a story about a failed home purchase, moving in from out of state to start a new job at the hospital on Monday, and a moving truck loaded with furniture that didn't have a destination.

The buyers said they had a cashier's check made out for a certain amount that was to be for the home purchase that had failed. This amount of this check was more than our list price by $5,000. They saw our home online, loved the pictures, and wanted to close fast. How soon could we (the sellers) be out was their main question. The buyers were willing to pay over the asking price, by $5,000, in order to close quickly and have us vacate the house so they could move in. They wanted to close over the weekend, when banks were not open.

They came on Sunday to see the home. Being very nit-picky over details around the house, they wanted to revise their purchase price to just $1,000 over the asking price (and now $4,000 less than the cashier's check).

My assumption is that the first scam is to get a seller to sell over a weekend and write a check to the buyer for the difference between the cashier's check and purchase price.

We refused to close on a weekend, and said we could meet at the bank on which the cashier's check was drawn on Monday morning to close the deal. The buyers never showed up. We left after 30 minutes, and they later  texted to say their vehicle was stolen and so was their id/wallet/money.

That is when I think scam #2 was being put into action - trying to get us to pay them money to help them get where they needed to be, so they could recover money/id/etc. and still buy the house. This whole time they professed to wanting the house.

Their story was always just plausible enough to sound legitimate. But there were some inconsistencies and holes as well". Very interesting incident, I think they did the right thing. Of course, I am curious about a $5,000 home. I think I could spring for that.
