US Olympic Trials
Today Helena’s Leah Thornton will be swimming in Heat 11 (out of 17) at the Olympic Preliminary Women 100 LC Meter Backstroke in Omaha. It will start at 10am today. They should be showing the highlights at the website. We are cheering for you Leah!
Fireworks
I will post more about this Saturday Independence Day celebrations at the Helena Amphitheater later this week but there was a point I left off last week's post. The fireworks will be shot from the Sports complex. I'll let you know if that changes, but you will be the cool ones facing the right direction when they go off at 9:30pm. ((UPDATE: I am being told they are going to be angled so you can see them from the park but be prepared to move if necessary))
Police Chase
There was a police chase yesterday that crossed into Helena. A man was pulled over by Alabaster police but then he drove off which led to a car chase, a crash and finally a foot chase. He was eventually captured near Fox Valley Apartment. You can read all the details from the two news links below.. The article says that he owed $94,000 in child support. I had someone tell me that two Helena police officers chased him on foot in this heat for two hours. They are in better shape than me.

Friends of Helena Schools
Congrats to the Friends of Helena Schools who received their 501c charity status. They will be working with the Helena schools and future High school to make sure they have what is needed to give their children the best education possible. The group will be focusing on going after large grants that will make Helena one of the elite school systems of the Southeast.
HAA
Not to forget the Helena Athletic Association, who raised $457 from pancake sale at the Depot this weekend. I got a chance to speak with their President, Doug Moore, who had detailed diagrams of the future football stadium and athletic building in Helena. He explained to me how they went out Hueytown and spoke with the staff there to find out what they liked and didn't like about the building designs. Since our buildings will be similar to theirs, the HAA was able to give some excellent suggestions on how to make ours better. If you get a chance, go and check out his diagrams and photos.
A Giving Problem
Everyone in Helena is very generous and has always been willing to help someone out. This is a strange situation where giving has gone awry. We used to have another donation site in Helena but moved it after people starting leaving unusable items at the site and the charity had to pay to have it hauled to the dump. If enough people do it then the charity could actually lose money. Which defeats the purpose
So when Debbie, one of our readers, told me that this happened again I thought I would pass it along so you could share with others. The reader told me that the clothing only donations bin on Hwy 17 (by the old looking house) was removed because people were leaving items other than clothing.
The current problem is that people are still leaving the items there… but no one is picking it up. It is starting to pile up. So pass it along that there is still a donation site behind Fox Valley restaurant and it has a semi trailer with someone on duty. If it is closed then you can take your items to the America Thrift store in Alabaster.
(Updated: there are now boxes by Sam Lily but check and see what type of donations they are accepting)
Mission Small BusinessLinda shared this with me, if you are a small business owner then there is a contest for you. You can win a $250,000 grant . So far only one Helena business is entered. www.missionsmallbusiness.com

6U Update
I had a couple of people give me more details about the 6U State Championship Win.They had to fight their way from the loser bracket and played 12.5 hours and 7 Games last Saturday and 6 of them were back to back. They had to play Trussville twice winning 42-37 in extra innings and then 25-14 in the final game to win the State. It is amazing that our young ladies had the endurance and the courage to push through to the end. Way to Go!
