About our Chef Randall
Born in Saraland, AL in Mobile County, Randall Baldwin grew up helping his mom and grandmother cook in the family kitchen. After spending a few years in the US Marine Corps, Randall decided to follow his passion for cooking and pursued his formal training at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. While at CIA, Randall developed a deep admiration for Chef Frank Stitt and his dream was to work in Frank’s kitchen. That dream came to reality when he earned an externship spot at Bottega during his last year of school. Upon graduation, Randall was offered a full time position at Bottega. He was later promoted to Chef de Cuisine at Chez Fonfon and was eventually named the Kitchen Manager at Highlands Bar and Grill.
Growing up in Mobile County, Randall is very familiar with coastal cuisine and when he thinks of Lowcountry, he thinks of South Alabama. He thinks of catching fish as a boy and cooking them the same day. He loves fresh ingredients and he embraces the idea that with great ingredients, you don’t need complicated dishes. His plans for Dyron’s Lowcountry include changing the menu more regularly to accommodate fresh and available local produce while focusing on keeping the menu simple and true to his vision of the Lowcountry. When describing fresh ingredients, Randall said, “I want tomatoes that are still warm from the afternoon sun when they come in the back door of the restaurant.” In his words, “I want to enhance the flavors in our dishes by focusing on finding the very best ingredients and preparing them in the traditional Lowcountry style. For me, that means simple dishes that have roots in coastal and Lowcountry traditions, just like my mom used to make".
Helena Early Poll Results
Okay, this weekend will be one month from the Helena Election on August 28th. So this is a good time to post results from our early reader's poll. We were just shy of 700 readers who shared who they think will win the elections in a month. I had a couple of candidates already say they think the poll is inaccurate and...
They are absolutely correct in the sense that this isn't a true scientific poll. It is only based on the opinions of people who read this blog, so it doesn't show the preference of voters who are not online or who never heard of the blog. Think of this poll as a sampling of voters. I think this is just another piece of data like going to candidate's facebook pages.
I am going to keep the poll up for people who haven't voted yet but turn off the "show result" feature. August will be the climax of the municipal campaign season and a lot can change in a month. So if you are candidate (or big supporter of one of the candidates) and you think your numbers are low then use the poll as a motivator to get out there and meet more people. If you are undecided then here is a link to learn more: Candidates.
1. Who will win Helena Mayor?
Mark R. Hall 33.6%
Charles "Sonny" Penhale 30.6%
Greg Eddins 25.6%
Ed Scheirer 1.6%
Undecided 8.6%
This question had the fewest undecided. I think this is because the Mayor candidates started early and more people have met them.
2. City Council Place #1
Leigh Hulsey 67.9%
George T. "Tad" Parker 16.9%
Tangee Edwards 2.2%
Undecided 13.0%
3. City Council Place #2
Mike Jones 56.2%
Barbara Hyche 31.1%
Undecided 12.8%
4. City Council Place #3
Cris Nelson 54.0%
Mike "GR-BBQ" McNorton 28.3%
Undecided 17.7%
5. City Council Place #4
Leslie Bartlett 48.3%
Jerry Deon Pate 33.3%
Undecided 18.4%

Hewy,
Do you know who we can contact in the county office regarding how traffic is being directed during the construction on Hwy 52? It has been a mess the past 2 days. Just yesterday workers created a bottleneck that stretched almost to Shades Crest Road and had the intersection of Hwy 52 and 261 completely blocked. Emergency vehicles would not have been able to make it through in the event someone had a life threatening injury or illness. Many residents called the police department and were advised that this is a county matter and local authorities cannot interfere.
While I understand this project is necessary, the company handling the construction is not capable of directing traffic appropriately and are putting the residents at risk by making the roads pretty much impassable.
Thanks for your help!!!

I am not entirely sure but I think the best place to start would be:
Shelby County Engineer Kenneth R. "Randy" Cole 506 Hwy 70 Columbiana, 35051 (205) 669-3880 rcole@shelbyal.com
Found dog number 2 is mine. I miss him so much. Please help me get him back. He slipped under the fence while I was at the beach. His name is Charlie and he was wearing an Auburn collar. I can't believe he tried to cross 52.
