Tuesday in Helena

Vote Today
Don't forget that today is a vote on a proposed amendment to the Alabama Constitution. I know it is hard to get motivated especially with the rain but voting is an honor and a privilege. If you are a boss, manager or supervisor then help your employees by letting them have an extra long lunch to vote or letting them leave early. Voting will be from 7am-7pm at your normal polling place. To check that you are a registered voter in Shelby County and to see your assigned polling location. PS Happy US Constitution Day!
HBA CASH Mob
The HBA is organizing a "Cash Mobs" to Help Helena businesses. A cash mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business and all buy items from that business. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community. They may also serve a secondary purpose in providing social opportunities and introducing a local business to people who have never seen it.

The first Cash Mob will be at The Bead Biz this Thursday from 6 to 8pm.  Carmella's Italian Ice will have snacks and drinks for purchase, and the Helena Belles will be hostessing the event. You can find the facebook event page at: LINK

Trinket and Treasure
If you are wanting to start a business because you make some awesome stuff then maybe you should try it out at an art fair. Rachael Tolbert told me the Girlfriends Ministry at Helena United Methodist Church is hosting their Trinkets and Treasures Sale on October 13. They are now accepting applications for vendors. If you would like a booth then you can contact her at rachael.tolbert@yahoo.com, and it will be from 9-2pm on October the 13th. they also have a facebook event for those who are on it: LINK

1460 List:
I updated the 1460 list. I added a bunch of items that you suggested. It really isnt campaign promises but rather ideas that you have that you think would be cool for the city council to accomplish. I think the best ideas come for everyday people so it is our duty to list to all the ideas even if some are far fetched.   It is called that because I will have 1,460 days in office. So please email me if you have a brilliant idea.

Hewy goes to City Hall:
I would like to start a new column, where I will report on what it is like to be on the Helena City Council during this period of transition. The only thing to report (so far) is that the newly elected council will have to go to training class in November to learn what it means to be on City Council (and how not to be sued).

The City Council will get enormous powers starting in November . For the last 100+ years the Mayors held a very important position but starting in November it will shift to the council because of the 2010 census. By law the Mayor and City Council will separate. The Mayor will run the day to day operations and the council will handle the items like budget, finance reports and appointment of positions like clerk, judge, chiefs and some committees.

It will be a big shift especially for everyone. The President of the City Council will become very important, because they will be able to set the agenda and run the meetings. It takes at least 3 out of 5 votes to vote to decide who, among us, will be the President. We will be able to vote until the first meeting of the council.

15th Annual CASA Roast
The 15th annual roast is set for Nov 13th at the Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover. This year’s event will honor past honorees . It will include Helena's Mayor Sonny Penhale, and former Pelham Mayor Bobby Hayes and Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos. LINK

Mysterious Noise
B. told me that he keeps hearing a  noise in OldCahaba to the east that has been going on all day into the night.  "Like metal on metal or something like that".  I saw on facebook that someone else heard the strange noise in Old Cahaba. She described it as a noise she heard, "3 and 4 different times in that many tones or pitches. Like an owl or an accordion or harmonica. Loudly. Closer and father away. Eerie". Has anyone else heard it or know what it could be?

Blue Phrog Gallery
Mollie Brown wrote an article about Suzanne Hurst and her art gallery. She features famous local artist and they included Helena's Michael Johnson!

PHS vs THS
Finally ...here is a video from PHS vs THS BAND-OFF last week!

This text will be invisible to everyone but you. I wanted you to be secret conspirators with me and J. There will be a gnome hidden under the foundation of the Helena High school in honor of Helenites everywhere. It will be the most hidden gnome in Helena.
