This Monday at 6:00 pm will be the last meeting of our current city council. It will also be very special because Mayor Sonny Penhale will give a farewell address to the city that he has served for almost 50 years.
After serving on the Helena City Council, Charles W "Sonny" Penhale took the office of Mayor in 1968 following his grandfather's footsteps. His grandfather was Charles Iverson Hinds, who was Helena's first mayor after its incorporation in 1917. Sonny saw the city grow from 870 residents to over 16,000. When he started, the city limits was a one-mile radius and now it is over 26 square miles. City Hall was in the old brick building in Old Town, but it also housed the library and fire department. Helena had no city parks, no traffic lights, a small school, some volunteer firemen, and one police officer when he took his oath for the first time. What a change he has made to the city.
In Sonny's childhood, Old Town Helena was decimated by tornadoes and in the 1960s it only being used for storage and warehouses. He began a main street revitalization project in the 1990's that would recreate and transform Old Town into what is is today. In 2006 the area was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Helena Historic District. It was all ranked in the top 100 places to raise a family and the 90th place place to live in America by Money Magazine.
Thank you Sonny for everything you have done for Helena!
