Helena Hometown Pharmacy Closing
Jan Arledge posted this message on my facebook page:
"Thank you to all our loyal patrons. Helena Hometown pharmacy closed last night at 8pm. CVS will be handling your healthcare needs. We did not receive the support we needed to continue our business in Helena. We recommend CVS located on highway 17 Helena. So bittersweet, keep us in your prayers".
Jan, we hate to see you go. You will be missed.
Flight of the Humming Bid

Gene and Cindi Jones backyard was covered in a news story. They havereceived somewhere around 60-100 hummingbirds in their Helena yard during the recent humming bird migration. The article discusses type of hummingbird and plants. The photo is also from the story. Full story

Crime Rates
John Archibald discusses the recently released FBI 2011 collection of crime data in an article yesterday. He mentions Helena: “ The city with the lowest crime rate in Alabama last year was Trussville, followed by Helena, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Pelham and Pleasant Grove”. I decided to head over to the FBI side and pull some of that data about Helena.

Here are our Helena, AL Crime Stats as compared to Alabama Cities of similar size from the FBI:

I also saw a category for size of police force and saw that we have a smaller police force than other cities of our size. We are fortunate for the officers we have that have kept a low crime rate so far but we need the right number of officers. Out of all the things that City government is expected to do. Keep families safe is one of the biggest.

Interesting how we have a post about how safe our town is with such a small police force and also how another small business in Helena has been shut down due to lack of local support. Hey Helena, just how long do you think the town can afford to keep the police force protecting the town and keeping crime rates down without sales tax revenue? Guess everyone is going to be cool with jacking up the property tax mil rate to compensate? Jus sayin'....

It's hard to change your shopping habits with things you depend on, like prescriptions. Also, that side of Hwy 17 is tough to enter and leave. Knowing that three restaurants have failed in the same location and a chain restaurant was unable to stay open should tell a business owner that you should locate elsewhere.

@UABrainDoc - where exactly in Helena would be a good place to open a business like a pharmacy? Where in Helena is not "tough to enter and leave"? Helena has woefully under-developed road infrastructure everywhere. Obsolete and overly-restrictive ordinances make it virtually impossible to locate a business in MANY areas of the city. Simply getting out of and into the city during "rush hour" is an eternal nightmare. If the best argument against supporting local businesses is that it is too hard to "change your shopping habits", then Helena is certainly doomed.
