Mascot and Color Pick
Here is an email that was sent out today from the schools about the process in which the Helena High School colors and mascot will be chosen. Everyone who is interested should go to the meeting. See below
"Dear Helena Parents:
We am pleased to share some important news with you regarding the process that will be used to select the school colors and mascot for the new Helena High School. As you probably know, the construction of Helena High School is coming right along. It is exciting to see this construction progress.
We are at a time in the building process that the school architects need a selection to be made for the high school colors and a mascot. Normally this process would be managed by the High School principal, but this person will not be named until next year. Therefore, Mr. Tom Ferguson, Deputy Superintendent of Shelby County Schools, approached the three current Helena school principals with a selection process. We reviewed the process last Friday. We are pleased to see that the process of selecting the high school colors and mascot will be organized by a cross section of parents in our community. The entire community will have an opportunity to provide input, and we will all have an opportunity to vote on the colors and the mascot.
Everyone in the Helena community is invited to a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 16th, at 7 PM in the Helena Middle School cafeteria. The purpose of the meeting will be to share information on the selection process that will be used in the coming weeks, how the committee was selected, and the time line for the selection process.
This is an exciting time for our community. We, the principals of the Helena Schools, are 100% behind the selection process, and we look forward to everyone having an opportunity to be a part of the selection of the colors and mascot for the new Helena High School.
Sincerely,
Mary Cooper, HES Principal
Scott Knight, HMS Principal
Wayne Williams, HIS Principal".
High School Questions
Patricia asked some questions to Tom Ferguson of the Shelby County School system. She was kind enough to share with everyone in case they had the same questions. His answers are in bold.
Good afternoon. Rumors are flying around about the new HHS. Rather than speculate, myself and the other parents copied on this email would like to present them to you for your response. I’ve copied the information verbatim below. Can you please comment on these? In addition, may I have your approval to provide the comments to Hal Woodman for his facebook page and/or blog ‘No Sleep In Helena’ to share with the Helena community?
· The principal is suppose to be hired around Jan or Feb 14 and then the new principal will decide on the colors and mascot with input from the incoming students. (This was the schedule 1 year ago so it could have changed)
The Principal for the new Helena High will be advertised sometime next spring. A specific day and/or month have not been decided. Generally, we do like to hire the Principal of a new school at least a year in advance to begin to establish relationships within the community and provide leadership over transition responsibilities.
· What are the plans for the special needs students at the high school, I hear they will have a whole wing to themselves
No decisions have been made about the occupancy of any academic group in the new building.
· I have heard from some parents and a few teachers that there is a possibility of keeping the upcoming freshmen at the middle school next year and keeping the upcoming 6th grade at the intermediate school due to lack of space at PHS. I know that would mean having a staff to accommodate 9th grade at HMS...anyone else heard this?? If it could be done without putting financial strains on the system, I think it is a great idea.....
There has been some discussion about possibly holding the 8th grade at Helena Middle to ease the need for additional portables at Pelham High. There are numerous issues and concerns about this that are being discussed but no firm decision has been made. I think a decision will be made after the first of the year.
Also, we were talking last night about the possibility of a time capsule at the new Helena High. We thought of including thinks like small artifacts from the mines. For example, the miner’s tags which were attached to the coal buckets. We would form a committee to work through the logistics. What would our process be to seek approval for a time capsule and guidelines on placement and content?
I have no problem with the idea of a time capsule but I believe this can be discussed with the new Principal when he/she is hired.
Thank you very much for your time.
