Helena Youth Excel and Care but one lost a Bear

Happy Monday to you! Over the weekend, the children of Helena was have been out earning honors for their families and the communities. I hope I have not missed anyone. If I did, email me and I will update at the bottom or put it in Tuesday's post.

Starting Monday...Clorox is having a contest called, "Power a Bright Future."Joseph Cochran contacted me and said that Helena Elementary has been nominated and now has a chance to win up to $50,000.00 for the school! The voting will begin on Monday but we wanted to give everyone a heads up.  The money will go towards purchasing new technology for classrooms and help with improvements to the school. Helena Softball Tournament
Congratulations to our Helena 14U girls softball team. They were runner up at the USSSA tournament this weekend! The girls arrived at the Fultondale Sports Complex Saturday morning around 9:30am. After playing five games, they finally finished at 11:30pm and were rewarded with a second place trophy! Coaches are Robb Anderson, Rockie Widner, and Philip Allison. Players pictured are Brookanne Anderson, Kacie Maher, Leslie Haley,Haley Widner, Jessie Allison, Caitlyn Lyerly, Meagan Mooney, Kelsey Moon, Emily Otis, and Sydeny Devoe. Way to go girls and coaches!

Auction House in Helena

Michelle Barnes Coggins posted to me that they found this Disney stuffed animal on Hwy 52 between Riverside Baptist and Helena Fire Dept. We know there is a child somewhere upset about it so you came message her on facebook or email me

Flower Power
Wow, the relatives by creating your own flower centerpiece for Thanksgiving. All November the Helena Florist is offering Sips and Snips classes. You can get some friends together or come by yourself and take a class to create flower arrangements then take your creations home. You can even bring a bottle of win to share with your new friends. Here is their schedule for the month. Most classes are at 6:30pm.

Women Cross Country Team
Congratulations to the women’s cross country team for winning the Shelby County Championships yesterday and to the men’s team for placing second. First place individual champions were Andrew Givan and Mary Grace Strozier. Top five scoring PHS women were Strozier, Lesya Lackey, Erin Landa, Claire Vaughn, and Maggie Lucas. Top
five scoring PHS guy were Givan, Tyler Treadwell, Kevin Midgette, Casey Pierce, and Jonathon Fleagle. Our runners have been working very hard and were very excited to bring home 2 trophies. If you teach a runner tell them congratulations. Both teams will compete in the Dew it on the Trails Invitational in Decatur this weekend. Go Ham!)

Also Andrew Givan, Tyler Treadwell, Erin Landa, and Mary Grace Strozier ran in the state cross country meet at Jesse Owens on Saturday. Way to Go and thanks to Jane Holston for the update!

Acting All Star
Lydia Cobb is a Helena Belle and was awarded “All-star Cast Award” at the Water Trumbauer Theatre Festival/Competition held Saturday, November 3rd at Thompson High School. The PHS theater department performed in the one act category. Our show was called I Never Saw Another Butterfly, she and her two supporting actors were recognized individually.She was also recognized as All Star Cast, which is the over all top actors they saw throughout all eight shows.

Warm Hands, Warm Heart Coat Drive
The Helena Belles coat drive is continuing and is really picking up steam. They have sent their first shipment to the Northeast via the  Toomer's for Tuscaloosa truck that left for Staten Island. On Friday had over 230 Coats, Gloves, Scarves, Hats and Blankets donated and with the donation from Manna Charities they added 2 PALLETS of Gloves, HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of GLOVES to keep our friends in the northeast warm! Here is one picture of two of our Belles and the T4T team. Remember, there are still boxes around town. If you go to Kim Coman who owns Zone 1 Video Games in the Publix shopping center then you can get a discount on used games (good for Christmas) for your donation and there is another box over at Native Beach Tan
Helena in the Macy Day Parade
MerryMichael Ramsey has been selected by audition and will be marching as part of the dance line with the Macy's Great American Marching Band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC Thanksgiving day. The Macy's Band will give a Herald Square performance at approximately 9:00 a.m. cst. Macy's Great American Marching Band is comprised of students selected by audition from across America. MerryMichael is the daughter of Chris and JoEllen Ramsey. She has been a PHS Panatherette for four years and currently serves as co captain of the team. She considers it an honor to represent her school, city and state.
